About CSD

CENTRE FOR SWALLOWING DISORDERS

Swallowing Disorders also called ‘dysphagia’ is a condition that interferes with safe, efficient and pleasurable eating and drinking caused due to problems in structural, neural, muscular function and control. It can occur in children as well as adults as a symptom of underlying disorders (For example: Cleft palate, Bulbar palsy) or can be the result of treatment for another medical condition (For example: Head and Neck Cancer, stroke etc). Children may show feeding and swallowing difficulties due to sensory, motor, developmental or behavioural issues. Persons with dysphagia may experience some of the following symptoms:

  1. Cough while eating or drinking
  2. Slow eating/ taking long time to complete meals
  3. Not able to eat certain type of foods
  4. Food remains in the mouth after swallowing
  5. Food/water escapes between the lips
  6. Breathlessness during or after eating/drinking
  7. Change in voice after eating/drinking
  8. Feeling that the food remains in the throat even after multiple swallows

The centre for swallowing disorders @AIISH, Mysuru is involved in identification, assessment, evaluation, and management of dysphagia in children and adults. We have the best infrastructure, facilities and an expert team to serve persons with feeding and swallowing disorders.
