About Communication Disorders
Communication is the essence of human life. Speech is the most effective mode of communication and is unique to human beings. Hearing is the most essential element for a person to speak clearly and effectively. When hearing and speech are affected, very often it results in a communication disorder. Communication disorder is a broad term including many conditions affecting one’s comprehension and expression of speech.
Communication disorders can be congenital (from birth) or acquired in nature. Disorders can range from mild to profound in severity. These disorders are attributed to factors such as genetic and hereditary factors, sensory-motor issues, environmental factors, emotional concerns, neurological causes etc.
The spectrum of communication disorders includes problems in speaking, hearing and cognition such as pronunciation difficulties, stuttering, speech and language disorders due to hearing impairment, intellectual disabilities, voice problems etc.
