1960’s

  • Establishment of the Institute in the name All India Institute of Logopaedics on 9th August.
  • Appointment of Lt. Gen.B.M.Rao as the 1st Director of the Institute on 1965
  • Institute started functioning at Ramamandir, JLB Road, Mysore
  • Registration of the Institute as a Society under the „Societies Regulations Act XXI of 1860 (Punjab Amendment) Act 1957 on 10.10.1966.
  • Appointment of Dr.J.J.Dharmaraj as the 2nd Director of the Institute in 1966.
  • Laying of the foundation stone for own building by the Hon‟ble President of India, Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, in the 32 acres of land donated at the Mysore University Campus.
  • Getting of autonomous status under the Ministry of Health and Family Planning and Urban Development, Government of India, under the name All India Institute of Speech and Hearing.
  • The name of the Institute was changed from: “The Institute of Logopaedics” to “All India Institute of Speech and Hearing. The Institute started functioning in Rama Mandira.
  • Introduction of Master‟s Degree Programme in Speech Pathology and Audiology.
  • Introduction of Internship of one year after completion of M.Sc.
  • Shifting of the Institute to the Centenary Hall, University of Mysore.
  • Introduction of B.Sc. (Speech and Hearing) Programme
  • Opening of the Ear Mold Lab.

1970’s

  • Director-in charge – Dr.N.Rathna – 20-2-71 to 27-8-74
  • Starting of Infant Screening Programme at the Cheluvamba Hospital, Govt. Medical College, Mysore.
  • Shifting of the Institute to the Present building in Manasa Gangothri, Mysore.
  • Receiving of funds from the Govt. of Denmark under the Danida Scheme for purchasing equipment and Hearing Aids
  • Starting of the Journal of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing
  • Establishment of Wendell Johnson Memorial Library.
  • Discontinuation of Internship and introduction of two-year M.Sc. Programme
  • Introduction of dissertation work as a part of M.Sc. Programme.
  • Appointment of Dr.P.R. Kulkarni as the 3rd Director of the Institute in 1975
  • Introduction of Poor Patients Welfare fund with the approval of the Govt. of India.
  • Inauguration of the ENT Minor Operation Theater by His Excellency Sri Uma Shankar Dixit, Governor of Karnataka.
  • Starting of the Departmental Canteen.
  • Discontinuation of the Pre-M.Sc. Programme.
  • Introduction of Semester System for M.Sc. and B.Sc.programmes.
  • Introduction of Doctoral Programme in Speech and Hearing and UGC, CSIR Fellowships.
  • Dr.Shailaja Nikam was awarded the National Associateship of the UGC.
  • Inauguration of the Speech Therapy and Audiology Block by Shri Jagadambi Prasad Yadav, the Hon‟ble Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Rathna as the 4th Director of the Institute in 1980
  • Recognition of the Institute as a research centre for doctoral research by the University of Mysore.

1980's

  • Introduction of Non-Semester scheme for B.Sc. and M.Sc. programmes.
  • First Ph.D. in EEC to Dr. M. Jayaram from IISc, Bangalore
  • Introduction of the service of the fitting of aids/appliances for the hearing- impaired under scheme of Assistance for the Disabled funded by Ministry of Welfare, Govt. of India.
  • Introduction of House Building Advance Grant for the Institute staff.
  • Ph.D. Degree Awardee – Dr. A.R.Vijayalakshmi under the guidance of staff of the AIISH
  • Enhancement of the undergraduate and postgraduate programme stipend.
  • Training in making custom earmolds for candidate from Nepal
  • Appointment of Dr. M. Nithyaseelan as the 5th Director of the Institute 1985
  • Establishment of the Department of Speech Sciences.
  • Upgradation of the Electronics Section as an independent Department
  • In-House Training on Custom Earmold making was started.
  • Inauguration of Dharmasala, a free of cost accommodation for the poor patients coming from faraway places by Hon‟ble Minster of State for Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India.
  • Appointment of Dr. N. Ratna as the 6th Director of the Institute on 16.12.87 to 09.12.89
  • Starting of Forensic Speaker Verification Service for the Government agencies and judicial establishments.
  • No. of seats increased for admission of B.Sc., 20-23 M.Sc., 13-23 in 1988-89

1990's

  • Appointment of Dr. Shailaja Nikam as the 7th Director of the Institute in 1990
  • Celebration of the Silver Jubilee Year of the Institute and inauguration of the event by the Governor of Karnataka, his Excellency Shri Bhanu Pratap Singh.
  • Conducting of professional and service orientation courses to mark the Silver Jubilee Year
  • Development of AIISH Communicator Assistive Devices for Spastics.
  • Introduction of the extension program in communication disorders in collaboration with Family Planning Association of India.
  • Introduction of monthly merit scholarship for the B.Sc. and M.Sc. students
  • Construction of Speech Block and „C‟ Type quarters
  • Introduction of Short-term training programmes.
  • Installation of PABX.
  • Introduction of State-of-the-Art technique for Calibration of Audiometers and Immittance Meters.
  • Notification of the name of the Institute under Rule 10(4) of Official Language Rules 1976 of the Govt. of India for the Implementation of Official language.
  • Shifting of the Department of Speech Pathology and Speech Sciences to the new Speech building.
  • Establishment of the Computer Centre, Networking and E-Mail facility
  • Recognition of the Institute as a research centre in the field of Speech and Hearing by the University Grants Commission under Section 2(f) of the UGC Act of 1956.
  • Implementation of Preschool Programmes for enhancing social, speech, language, hearing and academic skills for groups of hearing-impaired, mentally retarded children.
  • Opening of a Clinic for Cleft Palate Children
  • Upgradation of the Electronics Lab with Microprocessor-based systems.
  • Receipt of state-of-art equipment worth US$75,337-35, under project entitled Prevention of Deafness from WHO.
  • Preparation of Audio Visual Publication Education material on communication disorders
  • Exhibition of crafts and arts made by the differently abed persons trained at the Institute

  • The Institute initiated a public awareness program on communication disorders titled ‘AIISH AISIRI ‘ in collaboration with All India Radio, Mysuru in 2020.
  • 1st AIISH Audiology Conference was held from 11th to  12th November 2021
  • Opened an Inclusive Therapy Park for children with communication disorders on 9th October 2021
  • A Mobile App for Hearing Screening, AIISH Hearing Screening App, was launched on 9th August 2021
  • The Directorate of Health Services (DHS), Government of India, designated the Institute as Disability Certification Centre for Issuing Disability Certificates on speech, language, and hearing disabilities in 2021
  • Opened six new Outreach Service Centres on 3rd March 2021
  • Hosted the 53rd National Conference of the Indian Speech-Language and Hearing Association on 19-20 February 2022
  • Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modi inaugurated the Centre of Excellence building of the Institute to the Nation on 20th June 2022
  • Hosted the Institutional Association of Communication Sciences and Disorders’,  Audiology Conference from 25th to 27th August 2022
  • A public comfort complex was opened in August 2022
  • The Institute was re-accredited by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), UGC, Government of India, with a CGPA of 3.24 on a five-point scale at ‘A’ grade on 15th November 2022.
  • The Institute was recognized as the Nodal Centre for Implementing the Mother-Child Program of the Department for the Empowerment of Differently-abled and Senior Citizens, Government of Karnataka, in 2022
  • The Institute was selected as one of the Auditory-Visual Therapy and Training Centres for hearing-impaired children undergoing surgery or cochlear implantation under the Cochlear Implant Scheme of the Health and Family Welfare Department, Govt. of Karnataka in 2022.
  • The Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the University of Mysore, Mysuru, towards knowledge support, academic collaboration, and development and delivery of content for broadcasting and transmission at Radio Manasa 89.6, the FM channel of the Mysore University, on 3rd February 2023.
  • The Institute launched an indigenously developed Learning Management System (LMS) based on Moodle open-source software in March 2023.
  • AIISH-like Institution: Dr. Mansukh L. Mandaviya, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India, laid the foundation for an AIISH-like Institution in Kanpur, UP,  on 24th  January 2024.
